ZHANA IVANOVA

FLIPSIDES [1&2]
Performance, duration 35 min
Theatre Bagatela, Sarego 7, Kraków

Considering how our lives are largely driven by notions of worth and purpose, Ivanova has been concentrating on things which have been rendered marginal and useless. She has been making lists of objects that appear no longer to fulfil their function, and aiming to figure out a way to make the discarded somehow significant again. In a series of public presentations under the title of Flipsides, she has been introducing selected items from her lists and attempting to put them to good use.

Various stages of Flipsides have been presented at a.o. W139 (Amsterdam), HetVeem Theater (Amsterdam) and Zeebelt (The Hague). A full-length performance is in development with HetVeem Theater (Amsterdam) and is scheduled to premiere in March 2013.

Zhana Ivanova lives in Amsterdam. She produces works in the field of performance and time-based arts. The patterns and systems to which we become accustomed in daily experience are of central interest. She attempts forms which are inherent to the subjects in question. Her constructions are initially formal and rule-governed yet, within these constructions, she insistently exposes the ambiguity of her own rules. Ivanova was educated at Queen Mary University College, London and at DasArts, Amsterdam. Her works have been realised in galleries and festivals internationally, a.o. Künstlerhaus Mousonturm (Frankfurt), Mediamatic (Amsterdam), Ellen de Brujne Projects (Amsterdam), Frascati (Amsterdam), W139 (Amsterdam), HetVeem (Amsterdam), Beurschouwburg (Brussels), Galerija Nova (Zagreb), Product Contemporary Art Festival (Varna). Ivanova is currently a resident at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunste, (Amsterdam).
