“The film is a recording of the initial performance of The Dead Class, a seance by Tadeusz Kantor, expressed through the cinematic language. As far as the filmed version of the play is concerned, the choise of takes, frame composition and rhythms emanating from the editing do not so much undermine the authorship as such, as they make it more complex. Having been given diffrent sort of acces to the theatrical work, the viewer is bound to miss out on many aspects but also gain something new. The recording of The Dead Class is a co-action of masters, of individuals, which gives the film an extraordinary quality. Although there has been other footage of The Dead Class since then, this has been the recording of choice for many viewers around the world for the last forty years”.
